Net Metering in Pakistan – Complete Customer Guide

Everything you need to know about net metering in Pakistan – eligibility, process, rates, and timelines.

What Is Net Metering?

Net metering allows solar system owners to export surplus electricity to the national grid and receive bill credits in return. It is regulated by NEPRA (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority) under the Net Metering Regulations 2015.

Who Is Eligible?

Any residential, commercial, or industrial electricity consumer with a system size between 1 kW and 1 MW is eligible. Your DISCO connection must be in your name.

How Bill Credits Work

During the day your solar system generates electricity. Whatever your home or business does not use at that moment is exported to the grid. Your DISCO's bidirectional meter records exports and imports separately. At billing time, exported units are subtracted from imported units. If you exported more than you imported, the surplus credit carries forward to next month indefinitely.

Which DISCOs Are Covered?

All DISCOs in Pakistan are covered: LESCO, FESCO, MEPCO, IESCO, GEPCO, HESCO, QESCO, SEPCO, PESCO, and TESCO.

How Long Does Approval Take?

Typically 45–90 days from application submission to bidirectional meter installation. LESCO generally processes faster than other DISCOs.

What Documents Are Required?

Completed DISCO application form · Single-line diagram of the solar system · Equipment specification sheets (panel and inverter datasheets) · Copy of your DISCO electricity bill · Copy of CNIC of the connection holder · Proof of ownership or tenancy of the premises · Insurance certificate of the solar system

Saonix prepares and submits all of these documents on your behalf at no extra charge when we install your system.

What Is the Buyback Rate?

DISCO credits exported units at the full retail tariff rate – it is a unit-for-unit offset, not a reduced buyback rate. This makes Pakistani net metering one of the most favourable in the region.
